About This Textbook¶
Mission¶
Applied AI Engineering is a living textbook built to produce engineers who can design, build, deploy, and lead production-grade AI systems. It is intentionally more rigorous than any existing online course.
Quality Target¶
This resource aims to exceed:
| Resource | Strength | Our Supplement |
|---|---|---|
| DeepLearning.AI | Accessible intro courses | Production depth, systems thinking |
| fast.ai | Practical, top-down | Mathematical rigour, from-scratch builds |
| Stanford CS224N | Academic depth | Engineering discipline, MLOps, enterprise |
| Full Stack Deep Learning | Production focus | Complete curriculum, mathematics, leadership |
| HuggingFace Course | Library-first | Why before what; internals before APIs |
Pedagogical Philosophy¶
- First principles before frameworks. Every abstraction is built from scratch before a library is introduced.
- Production over demos. Every code example is written to production standards: typed, tested, documented.
- Mathematics as a first-class citizen. Intuition before equations; equations before code.
- Honest complexity. We do not simplify away real-world difficulty. We teach how to navigate it.
- Measurable outcomes. Every chapter ends with exercises, quizzes, and a lab tied to explicit learning objectives.
Chapter Structure¶
Every chapter in this textbook follows a consistent structure:
- Learning Objectives — What you will be able to do after this chapter
- Prerequisites — What you must know before this chapter
- Motivation — Why this topic matters in production AI systems
- Historical Background — How the field arrived at the current state
- Definitions — Precise formal definitions of all key terms
- Intuition — Non-mathematical understanding built through analogy and diagrams
- Mathematics — Full derivations, step-by-step
- Visual Explanation — Mermaid diagrams and illustrated walkthroughs
- Algorithms — Pseudocode at the right level of abstraction
- Implementation — From-scratch Python, then framework code
- Production Implementation — What real systems look like
- Complexity Analysis — Time and space complexity with proofs
- Performance & Optimization — Benchmarking and tuning
- Tradeoffs — When to use, when not to use
- Common Mistakes — Bugs and misconceptions observed repeatedly in production
- Best Practices — Industry conventions and hard-won lessons
- Case Studies — Real-world deployments
- Research Papers — Seminal and recent papers with summaries
- Interview Questions — Technical questions at senior/staff engineer level
- Exercises — Tiered from foundational to expert
- Lab — Hands-on coding exercise with a real dataset
- Summary — Concise recap of every key concept
- Cheat Sheet — Reference card for formulas, commands, and patterns
- Glossary Terms — Definitions contributed to the shared glossary
- Further Reading — Curated references for deeper study
Contributing¶
This textbook is open-source. Contributions, corrections, and new chapters are welcome via pull request.
What we value: - Technical accuracy above all else - Clear writing with zero filler - Working, tested code - Honest discussion of tradeoffs
